The Power of Words Just recently we had an astonishing collaboration with Literacy KC and The Writer’s Place. At this meaningful and emotional evening, held in the nurturing space of The Writers Place, a group of area writers shared stories about the power of words and reading, and a group of new adult readers shared their challenges and triumphs in learning to read. We learned that one of five KC area adults is functionally illiterate. These courageous readers, their tutors, and the Literacy KC staff and volunteers are doing their best to reduce that frightening statistic. We were delighted to work with Literacy KC volunteer and board member Catherine Goodson to raise awareness of the need and to celebrate the power of the written word. "You have to do this again", several people said. And we will, in September 2010.
